A big thanks to Other World Computing for loaning MPG the upgraded 2013 Mac Pro! Ditto for B&H Photo for loaning the 6-core Mac Pro. 64GB memory kit for 2013 Mac Pro provided by OWC.

Introduction

Unigine 'Valley' demo program renders 3D mountain scenery. It is quite enjoyable to watch on it its own too.

Results

See the test machine configurations.

The 8-core 3.3 GHz Mac pro was no longer available to test.

All systems used a 2560 X 1600 display.

Only one of the GPUs is used by the Unigine Valley application.

Here the D700 GPUs show their mettle by delivering a 35% higher frame rate over the D500 GPUs in the 6-core 2013 Mac Pro. Less impressive is that the D500 GPUs provide scarcely any improement over the ATI Radeon 5870 video card in the 2010 Mac Pro. Moreover, the D500 GPUs are beaten by the D300 GPUs in the entry-level Mac Pro. Perhaps there are some driver performance bugs at large.
