MacMini — Turnkey Upgrade with 16GB and Fast 6G SSD
A few readers have emailed saying they are uncomfortable doing “surgery” on their Mac Mini to install memory or a fast 6G SSD, etc.
OWC has free how-to videos for installing memory or drives in a Mac Mini.
But if you just want it done, $99 with shipping both ways to install memory and drives in a MacMini is hard to beat.
Performance
With 16GB memory and a fast 6G SSD, the MacMini is nearly as fast as a Mac Pro on some tasks.
Want more performance? Then you need what I use— an MPG Pro Workstation.
Parts
Here is a shopping cart with suggested MacMini internal upgrades. Other variants possible of course.
The maxed-out “killer system” would be dual internal SSDs, 240GB + 480GB or 480GB + 480GB or 480GB + 960GB or 960GB + 960GB, etc.
Backup
Don’t forget at least two external backup drives (get eSATA + USB3 model).
Use cloning as a backup strategy as well as Time Machine on a separate volume.
