MacBook Pro i7 System Boot and Application Launch

Last updated January 8, 2010

Time measured from the “chong” sound to when Photoshop fully displays a 128MB TIF file.

The following applications were set as startup items:

  • Adobe Lightroom 3 beta 2
  • Apple Aperture 3
  • Apple Safari
  • Apple Mail
  • Adobe Photoshop CS4 with 128MB TIF.
  • Activity Monitor

See the system configuration notes.

The MPG Pro Laptop configuration dominates here. Although this is a simple test, it reflects the overall perkiness of a system with a solid state drive installed. A single SSD might even be faster, because RAID doesn’t generally speed up boot times.

What is interesting here is that for the hard drive (HDD), the exact same HDD was used with the exact same system (no change whatsoever) for the Core i7 and Core 2 Duo. Note how much faster the Core i7 is!
