MPG tested the Apple Mac Pro with M2 Ultra #Z171000US 192GB/4TB/60GPU. 76 GPU/8TB SSD are options.
The 2023 Mac Pro M2 Ultra would have been considered a supercomputer not that long ago. It leaves all prior Intel Macs far behind.
The feature set differs modestly from prior machines by having up to 192GB of memory, and up to 76 GPU cores, along with 8 full Thunderbolt 4/USB-C cores.
- Apple M2 Ultra 24-Core CPU (16 high performance, 8 efficiency)
- Up to 192GB of Unified RAM
- 4TB SSD (up to 8TB)
- 60-Core GPU (76-core optional)
- 32-Core Neural Engine
- 2 x PCIe 4 x16 | 4 x PCIe 4 x8 Slots
- 8 x Thunderbolt 4 Ports
- 2 x 10 Gigabit Ethernet Ports
- Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3

Ultimate GPU
Online complaints about the lack of support for add-on video cards are mostly unjustified. While lack of such support is odd (unprecedented?) for a machine with PCIe slots, the reality is that video cards with approach the performance of the M2 Ultra chip are as rare as hen’s teeth, particularly the 76-core GPU option. And approach thecost of the Mac Pro. Moreover, all available memory is available to the GPU (eg 192GB) when most high end video cards max-out at a measly 32GB memory!
Same performance for less in Mac Studio
For $3000 less, you can enjoy the same performance in the 2023 Apple Mac Studio M2 Ultra, the only significant differences being PCIe slots (none in the Studio), and 6 Thunderbolt ports (Studio) vs 8 in the Mac Pro. For most users, the only real difference is whether you need additional hyper fast internal PCIe SSD storage—that requires the Mac Pro, which could accommodate (in theory) up to another 224TB of SSD internally.
